(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) The Felucca Capri, a 1907 original watercolor by famed Southern artist Ellsworth Woodward, has been posted for sale on the Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee shopgoodwill.com site. The painting was donated to Goodwill and was spotted in a donation bin in the processing plant by Susan McCullen, manager of the shopgoodwill.com team . Her find will certainly be a treasure for whoever is the highest bidder when the online auction for the painting ends on Sunday.
Ellsworth's painting is framed and under glass. It comes with an extra treasure in an envelope attached to the back of the painting. In the envelope is a handwritten letter from the artist in which he writes how pleased he is that someone is enjoying the painting and that it is one of his favorite pieces. The painting also hung at the San Francisco Art Exposition in 1915 and is believed to have sold for about $75.00 during that time frame.
Woodward and his older brother, William, are considered two of the most influential figures in Southern art. Ellsworth was also the dean of the then newly established Newcomb Art School in New Orleans. Bidding for the watercolor started at ____ and as of late Thursday, Jan. 22, the highest bid was $2,500.
Along with the Woodworth watercolor, two donated aquatint etchings by Ferdinand Jean Luigini are being auctioned on shopgoodwill.com. Luigini was a French artist and at recent auctions his work has sold for as much as $560.00.
