The HHWD is part of Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest community improvement program. It is held annually from March 1 through May 31 and involves an estimated 3 million volunteers and attendees. Lincoln County has participated in the event for more than 10 years.
The day-long cleanup will take place rain or shine from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and is an opportunity for area residents to rid their homes of gently-used household items and give them to Goodwill. The HHWD also gives everyone in the area a place to properly dispose of residential hazardous waste. Gail Randolph, director of Keep Fayetteville/Lincoln County Beautiful, Inc., says, "I wanted somewhere for people to conveniently take their household goods (clothes, furnishing, etc). Kind of a one-stop day for all kinds of goods."
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation reports on its Web site that the average home in Tennessee produces 20 pounds of household hazardous waste each year. In 2008 almost 1.4 million pounds of household hazardous waste, including 315,272 pounds of electronics, were collected from 19,799 households at collection events across the state. Since the program's inception in 1993, Tennessee households have properly disposed of more than 19.2 million pounds of material.
