(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) An off-duty Madison County sheriff deputy has been suspended after a shooting incident in Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee's south Jackson store. A report from Goodwill's loss prevention manager notes the deputy, who was shopping with her three-year-old grandson, had her service revolver in her purse. The report states the child reached into the purse for gum and the gun discharged. The bullet tore a hole through the handbag and went into a ceiling tile in the store roof.
Store employees say there were about one dozen shoppers in the store at the time of the shooting. This incident ended with a best case scenario, says Steve Baker, director of loss prevention. Our shoppers and employees were not hurt. The deputy has been suspended with pay pending a further investigation by the Jackson Police Department.
