There’s nothing like a summer job to put a little extra spending money in a teen’s pocket, and the added bonus of learning skills that could serve him well when he begins his career. That’s where Goodwill comes in. There are three summer programs, two of them involve work programs, and applications are now available for each.
Summer TRAC Job Readiness is for high school freshmen and sophomores, or others up to the age of 18. TRAC, or Training for Retail Associate Certification, serves teens who are from low income families or have other types of disadvantages or may have a disability. There are two TRAC sessions, June 6 – July 1 and July 5 – July 29. The students will go on field trips, meet with guest speakers and take part in interactive activities designed to help them prepare for the world of work. Students who complete their TRAC session will receive a stipend based on several criteria including attendance and participation. The TRAC program is only for teens living in Davidson County.
The Summer Youth Work Program is designed for young adults, ages 16-22 who have some type of disability or who lives in a low income household or presents with another disadvantage. The six-week program places participants in a work situation, no more than 20 hours per week, and will be paid according to their age bracket. Some of the participants will work with assistance of an on-site trainer. The Summer Youth Work Program is offered in Davidson and Rutherford counties.
The third offering by Goodwill each summer is the Integration Program for children with autism, ages 6 through 15. The children and teens will spend their summer days at community day camps, integrated with children who may or may not have a disability. Camp begins June 13 and runs through Friday, July 22. Each camper will be supported by an adult who is assigned to interact and monitor activities. The Summer Integration Program is only available in Davidson County.
