Batman, Spiderman and Superman comic book fans take notice!  Goodwill has received a donation of 12,626 comic books, some dating back to the early 1960s, from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.  Also included in this generous donation are rare Vampirella magazines, which were first published in 1969.  The entire collection was carefully catalogued and is valued at more than $42,000.

The donor says he has been collecting comic books since he was very young and says this particular collection came together in the last 30 years.  He explains that the comic books were stored in a closet and along the wall of his office and he says, “My wife has been very supportive of my hobby but it was time to let most of the comic books go because I haven’t had as much time to enjoy them as I have in the past.”

Deciding which comic books and collections to donate, and which ones to keep was difficult, says the donor.  “I did have some heart tugs, especially as I packed up the Star Wars collection.  But I knew I was doing the right thing.”

The donor says he made the decision to donate the extensive collection to Goodwill after seeing the company’s television commercials about the positive impact donations have on Goodwill’s clients and employees.  “I realized how involved Goodwill is within the area’s large and small communities and I hope the sale of the comic books helps the company continue its good work.”

All 12,656 comic books are being sold through Goodwill’s auction site, onlinegoodwill.com.  Some of the comic books are being sold individually, while others are being grouped based on the character and storyline.  To date, the highest price paid for a single comic book was $161 for the Amazing Spiderman, Vulture’s Prey #64, published by Marvel Comics Group in 1968.

It’s estimated it will take four months, until October, before all the comic books are listed and sold on onlinegoodwill.com.
